Description
About Savvy Tax Strategies
We're a tax and advisory firm serving two very different kinds of clients. First, blue-collar business owners: contractors, builders, trades, and service companies across the country. Second, a fast-growing base of individuals and families who come to us through a national personal-finance referral partnership. These are people who are paying off debt, building wealth, and want a tax pro who'll pick up the phone.
We run two divisions: Compliance (bookkeeping, payroll, and tax prep) and Advisory (tax planning, Profit First, and fractional CFO work). Everything we do runs through the Savvy BOSS system — our Business Operating Success System — which takes a client from clean books to proactive tax strategy to real profit.
Our motto: Work Smarter. Pay Less. Keep More. We're small, growing fast, and allergic to busywork.
The Role
This role takes the tax practice off the founder's plate. Not part of it — all of it. That includes 150+ individual returns from our referral partnership plus our small-business returns. You'll own the tax pipeline from first contact to e-file, manage the people who touch returns, and keep clients ahead of the IRS instead of chasing it.
This is not a seat for someone who wants to grind out 1040s in a corner. It's for a tax pro who wants to run a practice inside a growing firm, with real authority and a direct line to the owner.
What success looks like in year one:
- Every return delivered on our published turnaround — no extensions caused by us
- The founder reviews zero routine returns by the end of the 2027 filing season
- Review notes drop because prep quality goes up, not because standards go down
- Tax season runs on a calendar and a checklist, not on heroics
What You'll Own
Tax production and review
- Own a book of 150+ individual (1040) returns from our referral partnership: W-2 households, families, rentals, and side businesses
- Respond fast to new referral leads, run the intro call, and turn them into engaged clients
- Prepare and review partnership (1065), S corp (1120-S), and C corp (1120) returns, plus Schedule C, E, and multi-state work
- Serve as final reviewer and signer on returns before client delivery
- Own quarterly estimates, extensions, and amended returns
Running the tax pipeline
- Manage the tax workflow in TaxDome: engagement letters, document collection, status tracking, and deadlines
- Run our Prep Day scheduling system so returns move on a predictable calendar
- Hit our tiered turnaround commitments for every service level
- Build and maintain checklists, review standards, and SOPs so quality doesn't depend on one person
Leading people
- Supervise, train, and review the work of tax and bookkeeping staff who prepare returns
- Give clear, fast review feedback that makes the team better each season
Clients and the IRS
- Handle IRS and state notices, correspondence, and representation (if credentialed)
- Answer client tax questions within our response-time standards
- Partner with our bookkeeping team to make sure books are tax-ready before they hit your desk
Feeding the advisory side
- Spot tax-planning opportunities during prep (entity choice, reasonable comp, retirement plans, depreciation) and flag them to the advisory team
- Support tax projections and planning work for advisory clients
What You Bring
- 5+ years of hands-on tax preparation, including at least 2 years reviewing other preparers' returns
- Proven ability to handle high-volume individual returns without letting quality or client service slip
- Comfort with small-business returns: S corps, partnerships, and Schedule C filers with real complexity
- Experience handling IRS notices and correspondence on your own
- Working knowledge of current tax law, including recent OBBBA changes
- Proficiency with professional tax software and practice-management tools (TaxDome a plus)
- A warm, confident phone presence — you can explain tax in plain English to a family on a budget or an owner on a jobsite
- Organized, deadline-driven, and calm when it's March 14th
Bonus Points
- Enrolled Agent or CPA license — not required, but a big plus (and we'll support you in earning your EA)
- Experience with construction or trades clients (job costing, WIP, contractor-specific deductions)
- QuickBooks Online proficiency
- Profit First familiarity, or a planning-first mindset
- Experience building SOPs or leading a tax season at a small firm
- Multi-state experience for clients who work across state lines
- CTA (Certified Tax Advisor) or similar planning credential
This Job Is Not for You If…
- You want someone else to own the deadline
- You need a 40-person firm's layers of review and approval
- "That's how we've always done it" is your favorite sentence
- You'd rather just prep than lead, review, and build systems
